Four tennis media days in two seasons
Girls tennis runs in the fall at most Los Angeles high schools, and we have photographed four girls tennis media days across Los Angeles County in the last two seasons. A tennis roster is small, which is a real advantage. Every player gets time in front of the lights.

Outdoor light on a tennis court
We shoot on a Canon R5 with four Westcott FJ400 strobes. Two go behind the players as rim lights and two go in front as mains. Tennis courts are bright and open, so we handle the sun first. The camera reads the ambient, we bring it about a stop under a normal exposure, and the strobes light the faces on top. The result is soft, even light with the court and sky still in the picture. No light meter on set.
What every player gets
Team photo, seniors, and coaches first. Then we re-rig the lights for individuals. Every player gets the yearbook headshot and then stylized frames with real tennis in them, a serve toss or a follow-through. The goal is to photograph the athlete, not just the uniform.
