Girls flag football needs real media days
Girls flag football is new at a lot of Los Angeles high schools, which means many programs are building their first real photo archive right now. Charlie photographs for Team USA Girls Flag Football, and we run flag football media days for schools across the city.

How we light flag football outdoors
Flag football is usually shot outside, so the sun sets the terms. We use four Westcott FJ400 strobes on a Canon R5, two rim lights behind the players and two mains in front. The camera reads the ambient light first, we bring it about a stop under a normal exposure, and then the strobes lift the faces. The result is soft, even light even when the sun is at its hardest. No light meter, just the camera and an eye for it.
What a flag football media day includes
Team photo first, then seniors, then coaches, then individuals. Every player gets the clean yearbook portrait. Then the stylized frames, with jump catches and flag pulls at full speed. Flag football players tend to be loose and fun on camera, and the best frames show personality, not just a jersey.
